Herbivores, Carnivores, and Omnivores, Oh My!: What Teeth Can Tell Us About What We Eat

This is a tooth from a Megalodon, an extinct ancestor of sharks.

  • This tooth is a shaped like a wide triangle.
  • If you zoom in, you can notice serrations, or small jagged edges around the edge of the tooth. These are there to help chew meat.
  • This tooth is closely related to the canine teeth in our mouths that also help humans chew meat while it’s in our mouths.

This is a tooth from a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

  • This tooth is shaped like a skinny triangle.
  • If you zoom in, you can notice there are no serrations, and the tooth is not as sharp or pointy as the Megalodon tooth.
  • This tooth is closely related to the incisors in our mouths that help humans take a bite out of our food.
